Compliance
RSCs encourage creativity in the uses of technology, but underlying this is a need to comply with technical standards, legislation, safe behaviours, and social norms which fit with sound educational practice.
- Without technical compliance, there would be no security or reliability of data and networks, no accessibility, and authentication and identity management within and between organisations could not be achieved.
- Without legal compliance, there is the risk of personal and organisational liability, with (in extreme cases) possible prosecution and severe financial penalties or imprisonment.
- Without the observation of appropriate social norms in interaction between learners and learners and staff there are risks to the safety of individuals and of vicarious responsibility by managers.
The multi-disciplinary nature of RSC teams, and the resources provided by JISC Advance specialist services, covers the full spectrum of support required by learning providers in ensuring their uses of technology are compliant in all the above contexts.
Sometimes there are areas of tension between compliance areas - eg. technical expectations may differ from pedagogical ones. RSCs advise on the appropriate balance within particular learning cultures.
