Data Privacy (Protection) Day
28 Jan 2012
Annual event
On 28 January 2012, Europe celebrates its European Privacy and Data Protection Day. A whole day of events, organised by governmental and other institutions and civil society, which will draw the attention to the value privacy and data protection have in our societies.
2011 was a year with privacy discussions about Facebook, use of hacking by journalists, use of intelligent CCTV by police forces, use of twitter during urban riots, face recognition, smart houses and smart viewing of houses, and ICT for active ageing.
The last year has shown that people do care about privacy both offline and online and are highly imaginative in the ways to strike back at these developments.
Proposed New Rules on Data Protection Unveiled
The new proposals aim to update and harmonise the current EU data protection regime including strengthening individuals’ rights. The proposed legislation is in two parts comprising a Regulation and a Directive which will replace the current Data Protection Directive (Directive 95/46/EC).
The most directly relevant part for colleges and universities will be the Regulation where the main law is to be found and which when it becomes law will directly apply to the UK and other EU member states. The drafts have still to go through and discussion, amendment lobbying phase before finally becoming law.
Further details can be found on the website of our sister organisation, JISC Legal.
