Shared services
"…institutions co-operating in the development and delivery of services, so sharing skills and knowledge, perhaps with commercial participation." JISC Shared Services Briefing Paper (2008)
Funding cuts may be a driver for making use/entering into the sharing of service eg. In higher education, student fees may result in reduced student numbers therefore a cut in numbers, minimum contract rates for work-based learning (UK & Wales) may mean mergers and acquisitions may be the only way forward.
The economic climate will have an impact with providers looking to make efficiencies and improve effectiveness. Providers may make economies of scale by joining together to share services. Shared services could help to give a competitive advantage to providers/institutions.
